Softball Rules

Please refer to the Intramural Handbook for general rules/guidelines.

Fields/Equipment

  • All games will be played on the Lakeside softball field (please see below for directions).
  • Bases are 55’ apart, with the pitchers distance at 38’.
  • Games will be played with an IM 16” softball. This softball is made to be played without the use of gloves. However, regular softball gloves are optional (batting or receiver’s gloves work the best).
  • Bats are provided, but personal bats may be used.

League Format

  • There are three leagues (a minimum of 4 teams per league): men’s, women’s, and co-rec.
  • Games will be scheduled on Tuesdays or Thursdays 3:30-6:30pm.
  • Teams play within the league during the regular season to determine tournament rankings.
  • At the end of the season, teams play a tournament to decide league champions.

Game Rules

A. Equipment
  1. Gloves are optional.
  2. No metal spikes are permitted.
  3. A player may not wear any type of cast. Participants who must wear metal/hard knee braces are required to cover the brace with a neoprene sleeve (minimum 1/4” thick).
  4. Exposed jewelry (wrist watches, bracelets, larger hoop-type earrings, neck chains, or any other item judged to be dangerous by the umpire) may not be worn during the game.
B. Players and Substitutes
  1. Game Time is Forfeit Time.
  2. A team must have at least 8 players to start the game.
  3. Co-rec teams must have one of the following combinations to be legal:
    • 4 men/4 women, 5 men/5 women
  4. In co-rec, the batting order must alternate between men and women. Two men, or two women, may not be adjacent in the batting order.
  5. In co-rec, if after starting with 8 players you would like to add a male you must also add a female.
  6. Any starting players may be substituted or replaced and re-entered once, provided players occupy the same batting positions whenever in the lineup.
  7. Males may only substitute for males and females may only substitute for females.
C. Starting the Game
  1. All games must start at the scheduled time. If teams want to start earlier, games will start immediately after both teams have the field for 10 minutes of practice time.
D. Inning Procedure
  1. There shall be no infield ball after the first inning and only one warm-up pitch between innings.
  2. SCORING: SCORING IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TEAMS, NOT OF THE UMPIRE(S). Note: Please keep a “Baseball Box Score.”
  3. We suggest that each team keep the box score for themselves and the opposing team to ensure that both teams are batting according to the order on the score sheet.
E. Ending the Game
  1. Each game shall go 7 innings. The Supervisor will announce “NO NEW INNINGS” at 50 minutes past the scheduled start time.
  2. If the inning has begun, it shall be continued until it is completed if the visitors are ahead or until the home team is ahead in the bottom half of the inning. If time is to be added to the game, the Supervisor will announce this separately.
  3. Ten-Run Rule: We will be using a 10-run rule in all intramural slow pitch leagues. If either team is winning by 10 or more runs after five complete innings of play (4-1/2 if the home team is ahead by 10 runs) that team is the winner of the game.
  4. Forfeits: The umpire or Supervisor has the right and the responsibility to declare a forfeit in favor of the team not at fault.
F. Pitching
  1. The pitcher shall take a position with both feet firmly on the ground and with one or both feet in contact with the pitcher’s plate. If a step is taken it can be forward, backward or to the side provided the pivot foot is in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the step is simultaneous with the release of the ball.
  2. Preliminary to pitching the pitcher must come to a complete stop with the ball in front of the body. The front of the body must face the batter.
  3. This position must be maintained for at least one second.
  4. The pitcher must pitch the ball with the following stipulations:
    • The pitch is thrown at an acceptable slow pace,
    • The ball, at its apex, is thrown between 6-12 feet.
  5. A mat will be used for the strike zone.
  6. Quick pitches are illegal. The pitcher, batter, and catcher must all be ready to receive a pitch before it is thrown.
G. Batting
  1. The batter shall not enter the batter’s box with an altered bat.
  2. The batter must take their position within 10 seconds after the umpire calls “play ball” or be called out.
  3. The batter may not step out of the batter’s box without first asking the umpire for “time”. If the batter does step out without “time” being granted the pitch will be called accordingly.
  4. Batters will start with a 1 and 1 count.
  5. Batters hitting a second foul ball during an at-bat will be called out.
  6. Infield Fly Rule: The infield fly rules will be in effect during games. This occurs when:
    • There are less than two outs in the inning,
    • There are runners occupying 1st and 2nd, or 1st, 2nd, and 3rd,
    • The ball is popped up in the infield or close proximity to the infield,
    • The ball is in fair territory, and
    • The ball can be caught comfortably (i.e. not a line drive catch).
    • The result of the rule is that the batter is automatically out, whether or not the ball is caught. Base runners may advance at their own risk.
  7. There is no bunting. The batter must take a full swing at the ball. A batter who bunts or chops the ball (fair or foul) is out. A bunted ball that strikes the ground is immediately dead and runners must return to their original base. Bunted balls that are pop-ups may be caught and any runners may by doubled off (put out); runners, however, may not tag up and advance. Bunt pop-ups not caught still result in an out and an immediate dead ball.
H. Base Running
  1. Base runners may leave a base as soon as a ball is hit. Leaving the base prior to a hit ball will result in the base runner being called out.
  2. When the base slides away from its proper position (when a runner goes into it) the runner is assumed to be on the base and not in jeopardy to be put out unless they try to advance.
  3. FAKE TAG: A fake tag or simulating the motion of catching a throw is a form of obstruction. The fake tag is a potential safety hazard and is also considered unsportsmanlike conduct.
    • Penalty: The offender shall be ejected from the game AND RUNNERS shall be awarded bases they would have reached if the obstruction had not occurred.
  4. OUT OF BASEPATH: If a base runner goes out of the base path to avoid being tagged, they are out. A player may not deliberately or otherwise crash into, or “takeout”, a fielder who is attempting to make or complete a play.
    • Penalty: the runner is out and the ball is dead. No runner shall advance because of the interference. (if the umpire determines the act is flagrant the runner shall be ejected from the game).
I. Out Of Play
  1. Overthrows: All runner(s) will be awarded two bases from the last base legally touched. The award will be governed by the position of the runner(s) when the ball left the throwers hand.
  2. Catch and Carry: If a player catches a fly ball in playable territory then goes out of play with the ball in their possession the runner(s) advance 1 base (if intentional, runner(s) advance 2 bases).
J. Other Rules
  1. No weather-related cancellations will occur before one hour prior to the scheduled game time. If a game is cancelled, the captain will be informed via email.
  2. If a player unintentionally throws his/her bat, the team will be given a warning. Each subsequent offense will result in the batter being called out and all runners returning to the base they occupied at the beginning of the at-bat. Any player who intentionally throws his/her bat will be called out and ejected from the game.
