3-on-3 Basketball Rules

Please refer to the Intramural Handbook for general rules/guidelines.

Courts

  • All games will be played in the Siebens Fieldhouse Gymnasium utilizing the six side hoops.
  • Court boundaries are marked with yellow tape…including the free throw line.
  • Take back lines are the straight part of the main courts 3-point line (or tape on the center hoops).
  • Each court will have a scorekeeper (a member of the IM Squad).

Tournament Format

  • Each team will be placed into male and female divisions considering the average age, experience, and height of the players. If a team is co-ed, it will be placed in a men's division.
  • Games will be scheduled weekdays (M-Th) 8-10pm every half hour (depending on participation).
  • Each team will play a set of division games to be used for division tournament rankings.
  • Teams will then be placed in a single-elimination divisional tournament.

Players

  • Rosters are limited to a maximum of four players.
  • Three players per team are allowed on the court at a time. A minimum of two players are necessary to begin and continue play.

Game Rules

  1. An “odd-even” method will be used to begin the game. The winner must choose to start on offense or defense.

  2. Scoring:
    • Games will be played to 15 points (win by two, with a cap of 21 points).
    • Games will be limited to 20 minutes. If the game is tied at the end of the game, the next team to score wins.
    • All baskets are worth two points (no three-point shots).
    • Free-throws are worth one point each.

  3. Fouls:
    • The players participating will call all fouls and violations. The player fouled is responsible for making the call.
    • In the case of an obvious miscall, the scorekeeper on each court may change the call at his/her discretion.
    • All fouls will result in the ball being checked at the top of the key.
    • On the seventh team foul (and every foul thereafter), the opposing team will shoot one free throw and retain possession of the ball.
    • If a player is fouled in the act of shooting:
      - When the basket is made - the team will be awarded two points and one dead-ball free-throw, followed by a change of possession.
      - When the basket is missed - if both free throws are made, possession goes to the defensive team. If one or both free throws are missed, the offensive team retains possession.

  4. The ball must be brought back to the top of the key following all changes in possession.

  5. After made baskets, violations and fouls, the ball must be checked with the defense at the top of the key and passed-in to a teammate.

  6. Substitution is permitted during any dead ball situation.

  7. All jump balls go to the defensive team.

  8. Backcourt violations will not be called (the ball remains live).

  9. Each team is allowed two (2) one minute time outs per game.

  10. No dunking! Any dunks will result in a forfeit by the offending team.
