Mission Statement of the BVU Writing Lab:
The Writing Lab has one objective and one objective only; to help each
student graduate from BV as a more independent, proficient, talented, confident,
and critical writer.
We help students become better writers in the context of sustained one-on-one
tutoring sessions or single-visit appointments. Both types of sessions are
shaped to help individual writers gain the confidence and strategies needed to
write effectively.
We teach the writing process, including audience analysis, document
preparation, invention strategies, research methods, claim and thesis
development, as well as project organization, revision, and editing. We
teach students how to write clearly, precisely, engagingly, and thoughtfully.
The Writing Lab at Buena Vista University has trained
writing tutors who are available to help you with all aspects of the
writing process. Tutors can provide feedback at the initial brainstorming
stage; they can read rough drafts and offer constructive advice on
fleshing out ideas, tightening prose, improving your organization, proving
your thesis, and providing transitions. You may also want to bring in
graded papers to go over grammar and punctuation mistakes that keep
appearing in your writing.
The Writing Lab tutors can offer guidance and feedback for all kinds of
papers from summaries written for a freshman seminar to research papers for
advanced classes in your major.
