The MPE (Math Proficiency Exam) is a requirement for graduation for students who began at BVU
prior to Fall 2003 and who are remaining in those catalogs.
This exam is given several times each semester and during interim.
These are the dates and times to take the MPE:
The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions covering the following math skill
areas: fractions, decimals, algebra concepts, area/perimeter, percentages,
ratio/proportion, and signed numbers. A passing score is 70% or 21
correct answers. You will be given 75 minutes to
complete the exam. Calculators are not allowed! You will be given scratch
paper to work the problems. Results are usually sent out about 7-10 days
after the test has been taken. Your advisor will be informed of your
score and the registrar will be notified (via a memo) that you have passed the MPE and
satisfied this graduation requirement (if applicable).
Review sheets (practice tests of 33 questions) are available at the Center for Academic
Excellence. Although you may take the exam as often as necessary in
order for you to pass, if you have failed on previous attempts, we recommend
that you schedule an appointment with a tutor for help with any of the skill areas.
We can help build your confidence and improve your abilities in specific areas
by concentrating on the types of problems you may be struggling with.
If you would like to review for the test or take a practice run at it, here's your chance.

The WPE is a two hour exam. You can take the exam Mondays-Thursdays during the
semester, but you must first schedule the exam with the writing lab director
(the exam is not given to "drop ins"). The exam begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
You should bring your laptop, a power cord, and a style manual with you when you take
the exam. The exam is administered in the CAE.
To schedule your exam, please email the director and let her know the date you are
planning to show up to take the WPE.
