These were the words of Dr. Karen Halbersleben, BVU's vice
president of academic affairs and dean of faculty, at a bittersweet
gathering on the afternoon of May 4, as administrators, faculty
and staff honored and said goodbye to six popular professors
retiring at the end of the 2000-01 academic year.
"I'm saddened because you can't take 134 years of combined
service away without losing something very, very vital from
our community," explained Dr. Halbersleben. "But I rejoice in
and honor that extra measure of dedication and service that
each has offered: through all the extra hours, the phone calls
to students, the willingness to meet with prospective students,
the wise mentoring of new colleagues."

At
most colleges, only honors students are allowed such an intellectually
challenging opportunity. But at Buena Vista University, every
science major can enroll in a capstone course - twice, in fact.
