Named for the great teacher of Thomas Jefferson, the George Wythe Award for Teaching Excellence is an endowed gift from BVU trustee Paul McCorkle and his wife, Vivian of Sac City. The Award is given annually to an outstanding professor who demonstrates excellence in teaching and also shows potential for further excellence. The winner receives a $30,000 cash award and a sabbatical. The prize is one of the largest faculty awards in the nation.

Faculty members are first nominated by anyone within the BVU community. Finalists are chosen based on the nominations, by the Wythe Awards Committee - made up of representatives from all five schools. The winner is chosen based on letters of recommendations.
