Internships

Many students participate in BVU’s internship program, which is facilitated by faculty members as well as the Career Services office. Internships for fieldwork experiences are offered for academic credit and are ideal for acquiring “hands on” experience in a particular field. For details regarding these programs, students are encouraged to refer to the entries under specific major descriptions, consult with their faculty advisor, or visit the Career Services web site.

Directed Observation/Interaction – is the initial field experience. It relates actual classroom experiences to concepts taught ad is taken early in the education program to help the student decide if teaching is the best personal career choice. This field experience is met via a minimum of 15 contact hours in a classroom setting throughout a semester.

Supervised Participation – is a clinical experience of at least 80 contact hours. Students serve as full-time associates with one or more classroom teachers. This experience allows educational theory to be put into practice. A second supervised participation experience in an appropriate special education setting is also required.

Field Experience/methods – is an opportunity to integrate the most current teaching methods, strategies, and educational models with real classroom practice. University classroom guidance and support allow students to reflect on what they have seen and tried.

Student Teaching – is designed to be the culminating experience in teacher education and provides students the opportunity to actually teach in the classroom setting for an entire semester. BVU students teach at elementary and secondary schools in the area. This experience gives students the opportunity to incorporate what they have learned and to demonstrate skills as a beginning teacher.
