If you want to make a difference . . .TEACH!

  Students getting help
Students practicing the "Teacher as Reflective Practitioner" approach with area school children.
Promoting the intellectual, physical and spiritual growth of young people in our public and private schools and seeing the delight expressed on the face of a student who has just experienced the realization of “I get it” is priceless. Few professions offer the college student greater opportunities for significant contributions to the future than those in education. In addition, the skills of a teacher are applicable to other professions. Industry, business and government hire teachers because of their ability to communicate effectively, plan, organize and deliver. If circumstances dictate a career change from teaching, it is good to know a teaching background can open doors to a variety of exciting options.

The School of Education and Exercise Science at Buena Vista University offers programs in teacher education, exercise science, athletic training and sport/ fitness management. Upon successful completion of a current teacher education program or exercise science program, the student may be eligible for certification by the State of Iowa to teach appropriate coursework in elementary and secondary schools. Completing the athletic training program allows the student to be eligible to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certification exam.

In addition to majors in elementary education, exercise science with teaching emphasis, and in specific areas leading to secondary education licensure, a number of endorsement programs beyond the majors and minors are available for students seeking a teaching license. Primary endorsements include: Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate K-6 and 7-12, Teaching English as a Second Language K-6 and 7-12, Reading K-6 and 7-12 and Coaching Authorization K-12.

The “Teacher as Reflective Practitioner” approach is an organizing theme in the School of Education and Exercise Science. This theme requires students to develop and reflect in three areas: as learner, as instructor and as professional. The reflective practitioner theme requires students to be conscious of their practice and its impact on others, to have a thoughtful explanation for the course of action chosen and to develop a mindset that constantly reflects on current practice and activity so as to improve upon it.
