Buena Vista University Concert Choir

The Vocal Music Department at Buena Vista University presents balanced vocal performance opportunities for students. Degrees offered include Music Education with secondary, elementary, or K-12 vocal emphasis; Music Performance; and Arts Management with emphasis in choral music. A strong scholarship program supports those majoring in music with a participation scholarship available fo students majoring in other areas but wanting to participate in one of the BVU Choral Ensembles.

Buena Vista University offers vocal participation in the BVU Concert Choir to all students on campus. The 97-member choral ensemble performs both on and off campus in Iowa and tours annually in the United States and abroad. In 2003, the BVU Concert Choir performed concerts in Methodist Central Hall and Southwark Cathedral in Londoln and in Notre Dame and The American Cathedral in Paris.

Students in the choral program can audition for the Buena Vista University Madrigal Singers each fall for the first semester. The 36-member ensemble presents the annual Vistas Madrigal Feast each December in the Forum Ballroom on the BVU campus. Students can audition each spring semester for the Buena Vista University Jazz Choir. The 28-voice ensemble presents two Jazz Shows each spring featuring the choir performing stand-up and choreographed jazz scores plus small ensembles and solos by members of the ensemble. Students in the vocal program are encouraged to enroll for private voice offered in several studios in the department.

BVU vocal soloists have been consistently selected as semi-finalists and finalists in regional and state-wide NATS competitions. The total program is constructed to provide students with maximum opportunities to develop their skills. Students are encouraged to audition on dates published by BVU admissions each winter and spring. For further questions, mail or call Paula Keeler, Director of Choral Music at keeler@bvu.edu or at (712) 749-2193.
