Components Of The BVU Curriculum, Their Goals And Purposes

6 BVU Objectives

  1. Students will be able to effectively and creatively solve problems
  2. Students will be able to integrate learning from a range of disciplines
  3. Students will be able to communicate effectively 
  4. Students will be able to integrate theory and practice.
  5. Students will be able to put learning into context
  6. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of multiple perspective

4 Intellectual Exploration areas
  • Fine Arts:  Through study of the Fine Arts, students will become critical consumers of art, music, or theater.
  • Social Science:  Through the study of formally and empirically grounded theory, students will learn about behavior, mental processes, groups, and institutions.
  • Humanities : Through the study of humanities, students will be able to analyze and interpret texts, ideas, artifacts,
    and discourse systems, and the human values, traditions, and beliefs that they reflect.
  • Science:  Through the Intellectual Explorations courses in science, students will acquire objective knowledge of the world, and/or an understanding of the means by which scientific knowledge is acquired.


4 Intellectual Foundations

Oral Communication

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the communication process.
  • Select, effectively use and adapt to different forms of verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Generate and organize messages competently and confidently.
  • Analyze and adapt to a variety of audiences and communication contexts.
  • Analyze and evaluate the content and delivery of verbal and nonverbal messages.

Mathematics

  • A student in a BVU Mathematics Foundational Skills course will learn mathematical content in an area of Mathematics not typically viewed as part of a minimal college preparation.
  • A student in a BVU Mathematics Foundational Skills course will be able to apply the mathematical content learned to solve hypothetical problems within a limited application context.

Technology

  • Be able to effectively and efficiently use word processing software.
  • Be able to effectively and efficiently use spreadsheet software.
  • Be able to effectively and efficiently use presentation software.
  • Be able to effectively and efficiently use Internet / Intranet communications
  • Be able to effectively and efficiently use the Operating System.

Written Communication

  • Include rebuttal in argument.
  • Demonstrate editing skills.
  • Demonstrate research skills.
  • Use documentation (MLA, APA, CMS, or CSE).
  • Organize essay for ease of reading (transitions, thesis, introduction, and conclusion)
