One of the essential characteristics of an effective, educated person in the 21st Century will be the ability to engage the world and understand it from a variety of perspectives. To that end, a central component of Buena Vista University's general education program consists of coursework in four Intellectual Explorations areas: Humanities; Fine Arts; Science; and Social Science. Students make selections from several courses in each of these areas, thus gaining insight into the unique perspectives and knowledge bases which characterize each of these areas of study. In particular, students are required to successfully complete the following coursework:
- Humanities: 9 credit hours in three different areas (foreign language; literature; history; media studies; philosophy; religion; women's studies)
- Fine Arts: 3 credit hours from one area: (art; theater; music)
- Science: 9 credit hours in three different areas (biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; physics)
- Social Science: 9 credit hours in three different areas (CPER; criminology; economics; political science; psychology; sociology; social work)
The faculty who teach in this program have met and developed a core learning outcome which is shared by all courses within a particular Explorations area. Details of those outcomes and the assessment procedures for each are available through the links at the right side of this page.
